where do you get help? - When doing your "internship" (Apprenticeship) (Mar/24/2008 )

Hallo all,

In Belgium its common to do a "stage".
A "stage" is a period during wich you go and work with a company thats working in the area you are studying at. And later on you write your thesis about the research you did during your "stage".
Sometimes, the thesis and "stage" are not connected, so your thesis can be a pure literature study without any practical experience.

Now I do not know if you need to do such "stage" in other countries?
I suppose you do and then its called internship?

I was wondering if you guys/girls had to do this ? Or?

And my second questions is even more important: how do you guys/girls make your thesis ?

And more specificaly I am refering to your literatureresearch and the problems that occur during your internship.

Do you guys have the oppertunity to ask your professors? Or are there other people to help? Or you are all alone? And what with literaturesearch, you have to possibilty to check scientificdatabases?

and what are your experiences during such an internship, writing a thesis?

Hi,

I think that there is quite a difference in system between Belgium and USA (at least I think)
In US (as far as I know)
If you are MS student, you can do intern and write thesis. in this case, you can get help from you adviser from your university or you can also ask some question from people in the company.
BUT, unless your in the field, that you have to write thesis only based on literature seach, you have to do work/experiment to write thesis. (I am in cell molecular biology, but i never seen anyone who wrote thesis just based on published data)

and I never seen anyone who did intern in private sector to write thesis, nor people who write thesis based on published data.

I am PhD student writeing thesis right now, and my thesis is based on my reseach, so I did experiments, and I have data.

I do literature search through Pubmed, google, and so on. My boss is very accsessble.
so when I have problem, I usually try to solve /or find solution by myself first ( I have a pride as PhD student, lol) but if I cannot find solution, I ask eitehr my boss, friends (also Grad students), or other faculity member, or of course I ask here!!

I hope this helps
