First Aid Kits not allowed in lab! - (Mar/09/2008 )

Pages: 1 2 Next

I had a good time reading the stuff in this forum, so I figured I'd share a rule I think is crazy.

I work for a big national lab and I once tried to buy a first aid kit. Next thing I know I get an e-mail from the purchasing department saying they canceled my order.

Apparently there is an official rule that says individual labs may NOT have first aid kits.

The reason is that they want us to report all accidents instead of just using the first aid kit. So to get a bandage, we have to drive to Medical.

ah...the joys of working in a government lab

The bureaucratic (or economic) logic behind: The more difficult and time consuming it is to get help, the more careful you'll work. glare.gif

buy one at target and keep it in your office.

It would definitely be removed during the next safety walkthrough (they just come in whenever and look around...and make us nervous).

I brought a few bandages from home and kept them in my desk...take that EH&S!

What are you supposed to do if there is really a case of emergency, that needs immediately help?? Make a telephone call and say "Oh, here is someone bleeding to death. Please send a doctor, if he has time"? blink.gif
In my lab first aid kits (just as fire extinguisher and eye washs) are mandatory and at least one needs a training as first aider...

Is it still called ''first'' Aid. The whole concept of 'first' aid is lost.

WHAT!!!!

Do they want to wait until something happened then they'll review their rules of individual labs CANNOT have first aid kit???
I think you need to voice your dissatisfaction to someone before something bad happen.

Just scare them that if some accidents happen and they victim couldn't reach first aid kit in time... WHO IS GOING TO BE RESPONSIBLE?
Most of the govt staff will try to avoid their responsibility and they will come up with something.

At least it works in some of my cases of dealing with govt staff.

OR just collect money from everybody (in the lab) and buy a small/portable one and hide in somebody's drawer where everyone in YOUR lab can reach.

In some countries it would be yielding to have an 'accident' and then to sue the employer. wink.gif

How far do U have to go to get the ''first aid''
