Can some body give me some adivce to work in canada or USA, cuz i dont have language problem there but i dnot know how much time it take to get residencey, but the main goal will be science as well, but i have to take care of my future life as well.
If some body can share his experience and give me some suggestion about it then it will be very nice.

hey samita,
are the us and canada your only options? if that is the case i strongly suggest canada. the people are nice, living is good, salmon is cheap!! biggrin.gif in the us i would say it depends a lot on where you would like to go, i have met people from the south (texas and california) and from the north (massachussets and new york) and they are COMPLETLY different! of course there is always different people in every place, i only mean in general.
why not considering singapur? it is one of the biggest growing economies, they are investing huge ammounts of money in research, they have good food, nice beaches, sounds almost perfect, don't you think?

I there!

I'm currently in Canada (and have been my whole life tongue.gif) and life is good!! I'm in Quebec, and the research here is pretty good too. As for the residency, the permanent resident status is not hard to get ( I have quite some friends who have it). So if you are not affraid of the cold, Canada should stay in your mind!

Yeah i am also considering canda as my first option and then USA. I want to spend a long time there so i would like to have my family life there but you know every body recommends US but i donot know how long it takes to get Permanent Residency in USA for people from third word like me. Second i want to join some good group but not old divorced or with out family professor.

Is canada is really a too much cold place. I am thinking about university of British coloumbia. How much temperature is there and how long its wrost. Does life is not comfortable with the cold in canda.

Residency in US can takes years and years. People have told me horror stories about waiting for 8-10 years. I know of people (who applied in 2001-1) still waiting for their residency. I applied in 2006 for my residency and waiting.

So Mr. Malik what you will suggest me, Its better to go to canda where chance for establishment is better in less time then US. US is off course science is good but we have lot of others responsibility except science.

It's pretty much impossible unless you have EU citizenship. Switzerland has some of the strictest immigration rules in the world, and I know people from first-world countries with PhDs who haven't been able to secure more than temporary work and residence permits.

If given a choice to go back in the past to change something, I would not have come to US. Fine science is good, but there are lots of other things which one has to take care. Heard from a friend of mine that One can get a residency in canada in like a year or so and soon get the citizenship. This makes things much easier in terms of getting jobs and for family. There are very very few grants for non-nationals in US. One has to be a citizen or even have green card to apply for most of the grants. And with the economic situation getting bad, getting grants is getting to be very hard even for well established people. It might take a few years to get the system working. I think a lot depends on your marital status, if you are married or single. You do not want to drag your partner and kids every few years across the country.

Looking at the whole process, I think Europe or even Australia or New Zealand might be good choices. I was informed about Australia from a colleague of mine who did his postdoc in melbourne.

I got my PhD in Germany and I miss it. I wish I could have stayed there. Its a personal choice. Life style was good and even enjoyed my stay thoroughly. Science was good too.

In the end you have to make a choice and be happy with it. Well, i made a choice and turns out it was bad or not good(partly my fault but mostly being misinformed about things in US like getting residency, cost of living etc. by various people).
