Diaphorobacter species - Diaphorobacter species (Jan/24/2008 )

Hi all,
I isolated novel species belonging to genus Diaphorobacter. But I wonder how many species there are in this genus.
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/Taxonomy/Brows...x.cgi?id=238749
Follow this link, i found one type species named Diaphorobacter nitroreducens. How about Acidovorax sp. LW1?
Firstly, Katsivela et al., (1999) investigated the strain LW1 represented a new species belonging to a new genus in the family Comamonadaceae, but formed no monophyletic cluster with any previously known species of this family. Acidovorax sp. LW1 was studied for biochemistry characterization, not for novel isolation. And then, Khan’s group (2003) isolated three strains assigned to this family, and concluded as the genus Diaphorobacter, and also proposed to classify strain LW1 as a genospecies of Diaphorobacter.
Can I tell Acidovorax sp. LW1 is one species??? Is it a type species? Someone can help me to answer this?
Thanks much.

There are two questions here. I know nothing of these species, but you have to distinguish the taxonomic reality from the taxonomic legality. The legality is set by "valid publication," as explained by the IUMBS taxonomy rules, and explained in the International Journal of Systematic and Evolutionary Microbiology. They publish lists of accepted species and higher classification names, and maintain the legal status of bacterial names.

Find out more here: http://www.bacterio.cict.fr/introduction.html

Of course, nature doesn't read IJSEM journals, and the facts on (in?) the ground are often different, especially as the 16S rRNA sequences are supplanting phenotypic characterization as a basis of classification. You may well find that you have more information about what is going on in your little corner of the bacterial world than anyone else. Write it down and publish it, and change the legality to reflect the reality. You can make it easier for the next person.

Thanks to phage434.
I didnot get more correctly answers from my friends, so I decided to write email to the IJSEM staff. Here is the replied email. I hope this will be helpful for the next person.

Dear Mr Pham

Thank you for your email. You are correct that there is currently only one recognized species of the genus Diaphorobacter with a validly published name. All validly published names can be checked at http://www.bacterio.cict.fr/. This is a very useful website for bacterial taxonomy.

I have looked at the paper by Khan and Hiraishi and they seem to conclude that 'Nonetheless, we designate strain DSM 13225 (=LW1) merely as a genospecies of Diaphorobacter
without a formal nomenclatural proposal, because this strain is the only strain available for the species at this time.' So, strain LW1 has not been formally designated as a species of the genus Diaphorobacter.

I hope that this helps.

Best wishes
