Career with ELISA - (Jan/16/2008 )

Hi all,
Am checking in after a long time.. well, my question is, how far its going to be useful to have a scientific career with lots of ELISA, looking for epitope?

Hmm...I don't understand your question. Are you wondering if it is possible to have a career where you strictly do ELISAs? Or are you wanting to know what kind of careers are possible if this is the only technique you are familiar with? Please clarify. Thanks!

Sorry for not being clear, was asking whether it makes sense to build a phd with ELISAs, strictly ELISA

I think you will be bored doing three years of ELISA...
Most PhD students would like to learn a diverse techniques... for future career.
If you look at the advertisments for post-doc positions, PIs are looking for post-doc with a number of skills.

Hope this may help.

Wow, a phD in ELISAs? I couldn't think of anything more horrifying to me.

Though there are many types of ELISA, its a kind of boring....!! It can be fruitful only if u r making a kit or something based on ELISA and sell it to a company, then there may be way to go..............!

If you incorporat multiple skills flow cytometry, HLPC, FPLC, all blotting, MALDI TOF, etc etc that would be great.

Just ELISA not the right road...BUT...BUT...if you find/discover a clinically relevant biomarker for diagnosis that will predict disease long before symptoms appear so treatment can be initiated this would be a worthwhile pursuit.

Thanks for your replies guys.. Of course its boring.. its not just ELISA but as a main read out.. anyways, that has been solved!

As Minimouse mentioned, while going for Post-docs.. thats the scary thing I worried.. Nobody looks how many techniques you know, rather techniques in your PhD worths more than other.

I know a colleague who was rather successful in lots of ELISA and has got qualified jobs; it may be useful for a company specialized in immuno-related stuff; however, nowadays, a lot (in my opinion: too lot) techniques are expected
