Which gift you are going to present to your boss. I will give him a soap so he should take bath.

For any occasion (his birthday, lab anniversaries, christmas etc.) we'd usually give him something cheap and tacky (sometimes even from the dollar shops) or if we have enough time...handmade (still cheap) and always funny or with a profound message e.g., for a lab anniversary:a t-shirt handpainted with "where's my raise?" or for a b-day "who're you...do you work here? Now, if I can just find my glasses and my mind " but for this christmas we decided to do some boot-licking: a cheap mug and we had a difficult time deciding whether we'd inscribe it with "the hottest of the hotties or "the coolest of the cool". He knows when he's being manipulated but we always get a laugh from him (and nice gifts as well).

Sent my boss an e-card from someecards.com - very funny site, if you like dry, sarcastic, and often offensive humor. He's cool so he can take it. :-)

depending how close you're to your boss.
Generally i don't give him sthg special (except nice end of year report). generally the whole lab goes for lunch sthg and that's enough.
