Homework question - what happens to cells when they're put in distilled wate - (Sep/04/2007 )

Before anyone asks, I've looked everywhere for the answer to this question; obviously it is in my textbook somewhere, but I'd have an entire unit (about 50, 60 pages) to read to find the answer, and unfortunately I do not have the time for that tonight.

So, I'm in Grade 10, currently taking biology and one of my "Reference Questions" are: "what happens to cells when they're put in distilled water?" I've thought about it and I think I have the answer, but not enough so to put it down. I Googled this, there was nothing; I Google imaged this and I found a picture but it's so large and blurry that I can't tell anything. I sure haven't been lazy, haha. So I found this forum as I figured this would be my last resort... If anyone could direct me to the answer (not necessarily tell me it, just give me a hint or point me in the right direction), it'd be appreciated. smile.gif

Review your notes on osmosis. You should be able to figure it out from there.

a clue : osmolarities tend to homogenize. water tends to go were osmolarity is higher

do you remember an osmosis experiment with a plastic tube which let water thru but not salt and this was filled with saline and put in a beaker of water
- what happened to the tube?

good luck
