Can i autoclave an Eppendorf tube? - (Jul/28/2007 )

Eppendorf tubes (made of plastic) are sometimes used in my lab for sample storage. Can they be autoclaved?

-marmar80-

yes, they can be autoclaved.

Eppendorf tubes aren't that expensive. No point autoclaving them and re use.

Thank u but i meant autoclave them before that first use. They come in a pack of 1000 and since we don't use them all together, i want to autoclave them p prior to use

To be on the safe side, you should always autoclave the tubes before you use them. Especially once the package is opened, you cannot be sure that they're still sterile.

For how long do u autoclave them? Are there any precautions in autoclaving them or other plastics? Special temperature? and another thing. can i put an eppendorf in the incubator (overnight at 37 C)?

Thank you

We do a standard 20 min autoclaving. I would dry them in a 65C incubator after autoclaving so that any water residues are all dried up.

My apology. My mistake to wrongly read.
Yea, I always autoclave the tubes prior use. Better be safe than sorry later.

we receive 1.5ml tubes in bag of 1000... so we dispose them in separate vials, and autoclave the vials. 121° 20'
