help with MFI, mean or median? - (Jul/17/2007 )

Hi, I am confused with analysing the flourescence intensity in FACS. Can anyone write in which conditions we use arithemetic mean, geometric mean and the median?
Thanks a lot in advance!

You are right!Facs analysis can be very confusing.
I can't tell you when to use each of these parameters, but I give you the definitions, in case you didn't find them:
Mean: Mean Average channel number or linear value of events within a marker
Median Median Channel number or linear value that divides a histogram in the marker into two parts with equal numbers of events
Geo Mean: Geometric Mean Average of the logarithm of the channel numbers or linear values of the events within a marker, expressed as the anti-log

hope to help a little bit.

Dear Apechteli, thanks a lot for the definitions. Maybe I give more detailed information. Percentages of positive cells is quite clear for flow cytometry. But when it comes to flourescence intensity it is a bit difficult to find the exact rules. For me it is important because now I am doinf cell culture and all the cells express the marker, but I am interested to see possible differences in the intensity. For this I am not sure to use mean or median.
