Another way to ensure a slow freezing process is to insulate by wrapping it in a lot of paper tissues and put into the -80 freezer. They can be stored like this for quite some time but before thawing they should be put into N2(l) at least for a short while. I do not know why this is but it increases the number of cells surviving the freeze-thaw...
Is there no neighbouring departments that could give you a small place in their -80 freezer, the cells just have to be there overnight.
