How does EDTA complex with ions? - (Jun/26/2007 )

Hi,

Does anyone know if EDTA can complex with only free ions in solution, or can it complex with ions already bound to, say, a protein? Apparently 1,10-phenanthroline can bind to ions already attached to enzymes.

as long as EDTA's binding affinity is greater then then protein X's binding affinity to the ion. As long as there is no steric hinderence that can lock in the ion in a strong protein cage.

there will be a binding competition for bivalent cations (bc) depending on Kd; use a program such as eqcal to calculate the stoichiometry of EDTA-free, EDTA-bc, bc+ and your substance PT-free and PT-bc; for calculation, you must know the Kd of the cation to PT
