How to convert from human dosage to rat dosage? - (May/16/2007 )

I am going to conduct an animal experiment using TCM to feed rats to see the improvement in bone property. I got a dosage for human consumption. How do I convert it to SD rats? Any formula?

Thank you! ph34r.gif

There is no general rule, as rats need really different dosages (often; the mg/g is much higher than in humans). There are textbooks on rat pharmacology with a lot of tables on equivalent doses.

The FDA has a calculator here: http://www.fda.gov/cder/cancer/animalframe.htm
There are so many variables that I would use that calculator as a starting point and run a few trials first. You might need to adjust it after getting your initial results.
