What can I do? - How to get a fellowship without toefl and.... (May/11/2007 )

I would really like to get a PhD degree in Europe or USA. I have a Master in Science, good grades, two papers, good skills and experience; my English level is good (I think).

May be it would sound silly…but..
I have been looking for a fellowship, the problem is that they ask for the toefl test, most of the time GRE test, translation of official certificates (which is expensive here) and stuff like this.
The problem is that my salary is very very low and I have to help my mom and sister ($$$$$), so I’m really not able to spend all that money (I live in Mexico). Official translations are expensive here, TOEFL and GRE too, and I’ll have to travel to other city to take them, plus I can’t be absent of my job.

I know many of people who got a PhD degree in different countries, they never took TOEFL or GRE and they didn’t spend much money because their advisors had connections.

I have no connections. What can I do? Any idea?

Or, does any one need a technician for 6 months or a year??, I could work for a low salary, I think being there I could apply easier for the fellowship!!

why dont you come to japan? rolleyes.gif no english tests needed tongue.gif ....but anyway if you want to go to europe why not choose non-english speaking country. in that case you dont need those tests. germany, france, italy...

Hi...
i also have friend that could get PhD without Toefl...but I think it is a matter of luck too.
I also live in Japan, but I had to present Toefl scores to get in here, beside of Japanese of course.
Now i am thinking to change university, to one here or another country, but all the positions I saw require Toefl too.
So, my advice would be to save some money and give toefl. About GRE, no many iniversities need it. Just look for those.
Or try to go to the places you know your friends went without having toefl....

Good luck blush.gif

well i think that in UK there are a lot of jobs without the absolute need of the toefl.
If you want to do PhD in france, a lot of universities set up exams in which you may have a talk. It's usually in early july.
If you want to have some infos for bordeaux, i can may help smile.gif

Hi Free!
I’ll really appreciate it if you provide me information about it!

Merci beaucoup!!! biggrin.gif

Kathy,
For a Fellowship from DAAD (to go to Germany), I need TOEFL test and a middle level of German. I started to take German classes too, but it’s reeeeeally expensive here, four times more expensive than English classes. So, I had to quit sad.gif.
