Psychopharmological drugs and the synapse - (May/03/2007 )

Hi,

I'm writing an essay about how the dicovery of neurotransmitters has helped shape the understanding of how the synapse functions. I need to write a little about how psychopharmological drugs and illegal drugs have also helped out understanding but I'm not entirely sure how they have helped... everything I seem to find in journals and text books refers to how the knowledge of the synapse has allowed scientists to develop drugs.

Any suggestions about what I should be looking for or how certain drugs have helped would be really appreciated!

Thanks,

Hermione

make a list of the illegal drugs, cocaine, morphine, amphetamines etc., and look at the way the act. With this information, researchers started to study the affected receptors, the channels and pumps and the other features and also the neurotransmitters involved their feedback regulation and how all this can change the synaptic physiology which ultimtely leads to drug development due to better understanding of the synpase.
