Glaucoma in mice - Model system for measuring glaucoma (Apr/19/2007 )

Hi, I am just starting to look at in vivo mouse models and I wonder if anybody have measured glaucoma in mice.
Is there any protocol for that and are there different ways of measuring that?

Hi, D.

I used to measure glaucoma in mice and I used a tonopen (same as the ones for humans) and the tonopen. The protocol for these instruments are the same as in humans. I think you have to be sure to not add pressure from your own hand to the glaucoma measurement. Also, we averaged the measurements per eye (for example, we took multiple measurements per eye, then averaged out the numbers for the final measurement). My lab has found this to be very effective and the results were repeatable.

Good luck!

Thanks for the answer!

I just wonder, is there not glaucoma without optical hypertension? Are there any post-mortem assays I could do, what to look for histologically? Are there any markers for glaucoma, I am totally green in this field...

Cheers

Hi! There are definitely stains for histology on glaucoma. I would suggest you go to PubMed and do a search and read the published papers to see what people have stained for. I know there are a lot of studies being done on glaucoma and the papers would be a valuable resource to you.
