Suspension cell culture. - (Mar/12/2007 )

I need large amount of adherent mammalian cells. However, I hope I can culture them in suspension way, thus the operation of harvesting cells would be much easier.. My question is, can I just typsinize these cells (L cell) and culture them on a rotator? blush.gif

If it is possible, can I do the same to all my adherent cell lines?

Thanks. ph34r.gif

No, you need to go through a lengthy adoptation process, or your cells will not grow in suspension. Alternatively, you can try using beads for large scale culture. Cytodex.

suspension culture of adherent cells is a means to analyze anoikis; if you are not interested in anoikis, better use many large flasks or plates

Hi genehunter!

What do you mean when say that cells "need to go through a lengthy adoptation process" and after they can grow in suspension?

I think that adherent cell can't grow in suspension because of their nature ( only after attachment to surface they obtain signal for cell proliferative processes )

Yes. you can, after an adoptation process.

Adherent cells can grow in suspension cultures with a lenthy protocol. Yes the process is lengthy and needs lot of patience. We are doing that now. It is more than 1 month and we are no where closer to getting fully adapted suspension cells.
