organelles of a cell - (Mar/04/2007 )

Hey there!

Just wondering where do the organelles in a cell originate from?...eg:golgi, mitochondria, membrane proteins??...I never actually thought about it untill now (and the answer is probably really obvious) but if our cells are produced by mitosis and we have DNA within the cell where do the organelles arise from...get what I mean?

Thanks

The organelles are thought to be from originally symbiotic relationship with unicellular organisms... as far as i understand they divide on their own during the cell division cycle and are partitioned between the parent and daughter cells at cleavage...

-beccaf22-

thus explaining why mitochondrial DNA is not the same as chromosomal DNA

-aimikins-

its been a while since i did cell biology but i thought the symbiosis thing only applied to the mitochondria while all organelles attached to the nucleus would split with the nucleus and all attached to the membrane would split with the membrane - dont quote me tho i'm out of my field now

-Dominic-

I'd support Domonic - Mitochondira are thought to have beeen created by endosymbiosis of two unicellular organisms.
The origin of the rest I have never heard anything about, but the replication areas nucleus and membrane ring a bell smile.gif

for eucaryotes, all double-membraned organelles (nucleus, mitochondria, chloroplasts) are thought to derive from invaded endosymbionts; it is normally discussed in all proper cell biology student books
