Animal Activist - The scary people who luv cute fluffy bunnies. (Feb/27/2007 )

A rather disturbing thing happened today. One of my labmates came close to being assulted by an animal activist. Basically the guy was hiding in a camera blind spot. He was well dressed, so my labmate paid him no attention. There are always sales reps in the building. Anyway, when she was opening the security door, he charged her. Probably trying to force his way into the animal house or something. Luckily security picked him up on camera at that moment, they came out of the animal house and managed to tackle him to the ground.

And that was that for a few hours. Then he came back. And basically stopped traffic to the animal house for the better part of the day. Everyone was too frightened to go upstairs fearing that they be recognised and possibily targeted by said animal activist and what every group he may belong too.

That's so scary! Hopefully his friends don't come to join him now!
I can't believe they can get away with that sort of thing

Psycho maniacs! (I hope Hobbes is not listening!)

That sucks, i got threatened by some animal rights nutters when i was a student...thing is back then i was pretty forceful in my views and we actually ended up exchanging more than just words,

i'm actually quite sympathetic to their cause, it's just that some of these people have absolutely no knowledge of science (or anything else in some cases) and make such outrageous claims, which are completely unfounded. they would probably achieve a lot more if they took the time to learn some science, understand why animals are used, and then make their arguments...mindless violence never solves anything.

That sounds ridiculous!!!! Probably these people should be used for in vivo studies. It sounds like a serious problem to do in vivo studies in Western countries. In Asia, we are lucky that there is no animal activist here.

I think Hobbes would understand the necessity of animal research, as long as it didn't involve tigers blink.gif

Yeah, they should be used for in vivo studies happy.gif

I saw some photos (who had been taken in early seventies I guess) of cats with bleeding eyes in Montreal some months ago to get people to stop "Science brutality againts animals"...Let's hope information will one day end into those people's hands. Until then... be careful.

Latest news...

The University is going to get a restraining order on that guy. And now there is this big poster of the man in the animal house. It looks like a wanted poster. Almost funny if it weren’t so troubling.

in fact id be happy if some sort of such thing would happen here in the depatment ph34r.gif it will force my PI to be scared to use animals and we will all switch to cell-lines biggrin.gif wub.gif
but japanese are too polite to be activists ...so no hope here rolleyes.gif

unfortunately, work on cell lines is not as 'good' as whole animals in many cases. we don't always see the same results when we test our stuff on cell lines as when we put it in mice. the results in mice are a much better indication of how the treatment will respond in clinical trials.
