Free publishing in acceptable journals - Which do you know? (Jan/26/2007 )

Publication does not become harder each year but also more expensive. But there are a few journals left without publication costs and even still with free reprints. I like to ask the Bioforum community to list some not too bad journals who offer free publication.

(Of course, there are some exceptions for non-free publishing journals which may bear the costs if your institute is definitely poor. Or you can get grants especially to pay publication costs...).

I start the list with (I did not check for the latest possible revisions in policies of these journals but you may correct me)

BBA

Journal of Cell Science

(posted also recently in the Paper section, however with poor (= 0) reply)

It depends also on the field of your research. In my field (entomology, pop genetics, physiology), in most journals you have to pay only for coloured figures. And in some non-free publishing journals, you have to be the member of the publishing society (often one of the profs is) then it is much cheaper.

Actually I thought it was free to publish in most of the journal!!!! blush.gif
Of course, except for colored figures and extra reprint.

unfortunately, these times are over; page (not image) prises are not seldom in the range of 70 US dollar; even some online journals take money for publishing; I have heard that BMC no takes money for publication; the online journal "Molecular Systems Biology" takes the cake with 3.000 EUR (or dollars? anyway...) per publication (!)

so if you like to publish w_o having enough money or rather taking your money for lab stuff, you may wish to publish for free;

please, list any acceptable journal w_o or low publication costs
