Crabtree effect - (Dec/08/2006 )

Dear all,

can anyone explain to me the differences between crabtree effect and Pasteur effect? Does crabtree effect results to high biomass and why?

Crab tree and pasteur effect are reciprocal processes. Crabtree effect results in lower biomass, because, in spite of the excess of glucose, which is be the source of energy to build up biomass, with crabtree, ethanol is produced and the energy and biomass yield is therefore low. Without this effect the yield would be (over glysolysis path way) much higher.
I hope i did not mix up catabolism and metabolism, long time ago that I learnt this.
