Which cell lines are best? - (Oct/27/2006 )

I'm doing a dissertation on tissue factor expression, and I'm toying with both U937 and MM6, but can't decide which is best to use! Can anyone come up with a suggestion please?

MM6 is a more mature monocytic cell line compared to U937. U937 can be futher differentiated which can be an assest if you want to study the induction of a factor upon differentiation. U937 is also quite easily transfectable.

thanx tap14, thats what I thought about MM6, do you know if there are any good journals with any more information in them?

How do you normally transfect these cells? electroporation, retro, adenovirus or something else?

Maybe you can also play with both and compare results.

Thank for the input everyone!
I haven't actually started my experiments, i'm putting together my propsal and methods together at the moment, but after all of my research my supervisor has told me I need to choose which one is best to use. My main problem is finding good and relevant scientific papers to support how I came to my decisions. Are there any better places than medline to go to for papers?

I have been using the amaxa nucleofector to transfect (electoporate) the cells. It works really well, but can get very expensive (which makes me not too fond of that company).

You can find information on the atcc website and on pubmed. Usually it is best to find the origional paper where the cell line is described for the best information.
