collective precautions - for newbie in th lab (Oct/11/2006 )
Don't be ashamed to ask questions. It's better to ask even stupid questions than to act stupid!
don't walk in the corridor with your gloves, don't answer to the phone with your gloves, even if you think they are clean. you don't feel it if there is a little drop of whatever on your gloves (and if you wear gloves, I guess that the little drop is toxic).
In bacteriolgy, I prefer that my students don't wear gloves (of course it's not anthrax) : so they wash their hand each time there is a little drop on their hand. When they were using gloves, we could culture bacteria on every door handle , even the one from the secretary
Dear All,
Question everything
Be meticulous in your preparation
Be accurate and precious in your experimentation.
Always use PPE

I would change it to: Know where you can work (more or less) inaccurate and where you have to be as accurate as possible. Saves time.

what's PPE?
Above all be confident!
read through what you need to do, go through it mentally each step, then go and do it.
and do not be too proud to admit your mistakes - you will learn from them. and what makes the difference between a great scientist and a bad scientist is humility and a lack of arrogance!
enjoy your life in the lab - and may it be long and productive!

learn where to put and how to treat the waste.
bacterial waste, phenol waste, EtBr waste and regular plastic waste, each have different disposal rules.
Personal protective equipment or the personal and protective are the other way around, but all means the same thing.... lab coat, gloves, eye protection face mask etc...
Don't orally pipette.
take the precaution of antibiotic safety very seriously. You can and will get sensitised and finally alergic to antibiotics if you are not careful when handling these compound. Antibiotic sensitivity/alergy will be a bad for further work in the lab and deadly if you ever get sick and need antibiotic treatment.
