Normal cell control for cytotoxic screening - (Oct/09/2006 )

Hi,there.

I am currently doing the screening of natural product against the nasopharyngeal carcinoma cell line.
From the literature search, i noticed that some of them used normal cell but some didn't include any normal cell during the screening. The purpose of using normal cell actually is to determine the selectivity of the natural compound.
As in my case what will be the suitable normal cell beside the normal nasopharyngeal cell that I can use as my control?

As you are screening natural products against nasopharyngeal carcinoma cell line, I think normal nasopharyngeal cells are the best to check selectivity of the compounds. You might also want to use normal cell strains like MRC-5 and WI-38.

the normal cell should be from nasal or pharyngeal epithelium in primary culture but this would be difficult to establish as the corresponding external standard; as suggested use your cells as internal control without the compounds; you will give rates of apoptosis or necrosis which refer to your untreated control
