Biology contaminated? - Ur views (Sep/01/2006 )

Pages: 1 2 Next

More and more non science people r tampering with scientific research.
Is this corruption reversible?
More than a quest for knowledge, science is being manipulated by people for
short sighted selfish gains.
Scientists are themselves losing control over the situation as economics of research
goes beyond their control. People pursuing science as a CAREER are themselves proof of this.
What do you think?

As a scientist, by nature as well as by career, I'm insulted by this.

-Astilius-

i'm not ok with that point of view.
I'm not right at the end of a career, but i think that being interested by managing a lab and/or doing top research deserves the "science".
Btw, i know research director in economy. They are interested by funds but they 're not paied more than a physician research director (not mentionning these are low or too much paid, it's only a grid of salary).
Being ambitious may be tough, but as for going through different levels you have to proove your scientific qualities, that deserves the research.

I am really insulted....usually I am quite thick-skinned in matter of insults however this sentence is really offensive.

I think your statements are too general and vague. First i dont agree with most of your propositions.

How do you differentiate science from non-science people?what r ur criterias?are these criterias widely accepted?or just your own?

and lastly, i see nothing wrong with people pursuing science as a career. Having science as a career is tantamont to ones quest for knowledge. There may be others who abused for self gains, but please dont generalize.

I am with the majority here

while I think it's rotten that often grants and funding can be driven by politics and economics, I do NOT agree that choosing science as a career is for material gain and I am also insulted

we are up near the top of the list for professions that require the most school and yield the smallest salaries afterward (in proportion to years of school). unfortunately I no longer have the link, but a CNN study in 2005 put architects, chefs, and researchers as the top 3 professions in this list. very very few of us ever scratch out the big bucks

-aimikins-

Yes , I am guilty.
I decided to pursue science as a career because I simply love it. Otherwise I will be sitting in front of a typing machine writing stories for a newspaper or making deliveries for pizza hut

One can find all sorts of people in all sorts of life. Same is true for science.

Many people might make science a career but the ones who are passionate r much more in number and these people do contribute their bit to improve our knowledge in science.

Money and power makes everyone greedy. And there is quite a bit of money and respect in this field. So some people try to follow their greed but not all.

-scolix-

Whoa !!!!!
I do not mean to insult any of you........!!!
I am not saying professional researchers are greedy.
My point is that the scientific community has been weakened by economics.
If you want to pursue research ,You HAVE to take it up as a career.
Thats my point...... rolleyes.gif ...science can never be just a job.

And yet you still managed to do so. Congrats.
If that's supposed to be an apology, I'll accept it.

When, exactly, does a job or series of jobs become a career?
