density of single strand - (Aug/23/2006 )

hi

is it correct that density of single strand DNA is more than double strand DNA.
how?

book "fundamentals of biochemistry Donald voet"
chapter 23 "ultracentrifugation"

What are you talking about? String, London streets or DNA, RNA, PNA, etc?

And by density...? grams per cubic cm, electron density; or something else.

Where did you find this statement? Do you have a reference we can check out?

if he's talking about DNA, it kind of makes sense

I think maybe the mass would be spread over a little more area when the two strands would anneal (hydrogen bonding, increasing the amount of space the electrons occupy as they stretch towards each other)

but I would be curious to see a reference as well
