Maintaining cells without freezing - (Jul/25/2006 )

hello everybody...
I'd like to know if it's possible maintaining cells without freezing (i.e. at 4°C, in medium or in PBS)...That's because I can't freeze cells now but I leave for about 3 weeks and I'd like not to lose my cells.
thanks

Best would b to freeze (-80C) and thaw them after u return.

I would agree with that. You can freeze them (slowly and in freezing media i.e. DMSO+Media) in a -80C freezer and then thaw them when you get back. That way your cells will remain viable. I don't think they would last at all in a 4C.

can someone deal with your cells during 3 weeks? replacing medium and eventually passage them is not that hard...

So thanks everybody...my cells will sleep in liquid N (so they will be cold, it's so hot here)
