How to identify whether a cell line might posses stem cell characters - Any general molecular markers for stem cells? (Jul/06/2006 )

I've recently established a cell line from rat pancreas. What kind of genes should I examine, if I want to see if the cell posses some characters of stem cell. Are there any general molecular markers that usually expressed in stem cells?
Someone offer me some advices, or recommend me some articles or books, please?
Thanks a lot.

The markers might change with the tissue. Best marker would be expression of glycoproteins which exclude dyes such as Hoechst 33342. Check Maggy Goodall's 1996 paper on Side Population analysis.

Thank you for your help.

I've search the PubMed, and results the author "Maggy Goodall". And no results in google. Would you please tell me the journal of that paper?
