questions about bacteria culture medium - (Mar/19/2006 )

Hi,
SOB and LB have the same yeast extract content but more tryptone and sodium chloride.
Why are SOB and LB used interchangeably?

What are the functions of the the components, tryptone, yeast extract and sodium chloride?

Which component is most important?

Thank you.

well according to Liebig's rule of minimum's you cannot say Which component is more important.
tryptone is hydrolysed protein and we used them for aminoacids,
some of the materials needed for growth is found inyeast extract,
Im not sure about salt but as it can be added from 0.5gr to 10 gr per liter I think it is not for osmotic effect and bacteria needs it. dry.gif
