macrophage cell line - (Oct/23/2005 )

Hi,
I'm new here! I was hoping someone could help me with the following questions..I've been struggling with it for some time..
Why are macrophage cell line used in nitric oxide experiments?
And Why do cell culture contain foetal serum and penicillin?

i don't know. Maybe you can look in ATCC or amaxa references...

penicillin is used to prevent bacerial contaminations
fetal serum is neccessary for life of cells. If there is no serum, the may enter apoptosis or simply die.

Hi Abz,
Macrophage cell line or cells using for nitricoxide experiment because its a types of cells who
invole in defience mechanism niticoxide production also come a diffence mechanism against infection.
2) Penicilline are using for checking of bacterial contamination
3)FBS/FCS using for many purposes there are controversy some people say thats its essential for providing matrix for growing a cells as natural envorment and some say its provides some unknown substances which is essential for the normal growth for the cell cultre.

Just to clarify what Awadh is saying ...

when macrophages are activated, they release nitric oxide. This plays a crucial role in the immune response.
