computer (laptop) maintenance - tips (Oct/21/2005 )

hi!

i think that computers take a big place in our lab-life...

so, why not exchance here some good tips for a correct maintenance of them?

i begin this topic with a "protocol" for cleaning lcd screen of laptops
i have tried a mix consisting of isopropanol and ddH2O 50:50 and a clean soft kleenex
it works very nice
please first test this solution on a small piece of your screen to be sure it is not too aggressive

hi
i use antivir personal edition free of charge, regulary and freely updated. you have also f secure which is also free and updated free of charge.

For cleaning computer, you can use spybot or Lavasoft ad aware
Then defragment regulary computer, and if you're running under microsoft win serie, use start/run/msconfig in order to unselect all poisoning processes.
You have for that purpose PrcView which allows to list every silent process that the standard control alt suppr may not display.

You can make ghost of your hard drive, using programs free of charge. They are similar to N0rtonghost...

do you know RegSeeker?
http://www.hoverdesk.net/freeware.htm
"RegSeeker includes a powerful registry cleaner and can display various informations like your startup entries, several histories (even index.dat files), installed applications and much more..."

i have never had any problem, simply a cleaner Windows registry for best performances!

If you're looking for computer help or advice, check out the other forums I'm most active in (I'm an administrator there) -- OC Wizard. We're just like the crowd here, but computer geeks instead of science geeks (I'm both, of course laugh.gif ).

Drop by, ask a question, maybe join our Folding at Home team -- a good science geek type of thing to do with your spare CPU cycles -- see here. We're ranked number 52 in the world right now out of thousands of teams, and we're always looking for new members.

Maybe even the BioForum would like to become an associate site? We have several sites that contribute members to the team...
