high fat diet - preparing a high fat diet for rats (Aug/24/2009 )

hai, i am trying to prepare to a high fat diet for feeding my rats to make them hypercholestemia to prepare a high fat diet diabetic rat model. i am trying to find recipe to prepare the diet as the commercial one are very expensive here. Does anyone any simple high fat diet recipe? Hope someone can help. :)

Have you tried papers by C Z Larter. I worked extensively with her for a number of years doing high fat diets using olive oil, fish oil, vegetable oil and lard. From memory though, she obtained diet powder with zero fat and we added the specific amounts of fat and made it into balls. You could grind the diet you have and just add the amount of fat (allowing for the fat already in the diet) and make it into balls, just squaring them off so the rats don't roll the balls around in the food hopper. A word of warning though, too much fat makes for very runny diet, lard was the best for this as it is solid at room temp. Hope this helps
