Doxycycline in rats - (Aug/05/2009 )

Hi there,

Just wondering if anyone has experienced any adverse effects in their rats when given doxycycline either orally or via subcutaneous injection. Any information you may provide would be helpful, such as dose rates, method of dosing, signs presented by the rats or if any deaths occured.

Doxycycline? isn't that a medicine given to those who are infected of a Sexually transmitted disease?

There is a slight problem with the mice/rats becoming dehydrated.
I used to give it to mice in their drinking water (with sugar).. but the best option, I found (and it's in a couple of papers) is to have the dox in their food.
the problem is that you can't control the exact amount they have each day... but they don't usually overeat the stuff.

forinternet12: yup, same medicine. it's also used to treat acne. it's also used for malaria. it's also used to activate siRNA in some vectors.
