Pimp my Biosafety Hood! - What are some of your favorite accessories for laminar flow hoods? (Jul/16/2009 )

I'd like to make our laminar flow hood more user friendly and convenient. We use it for BSL-2 pathogen work and cell culture. It's pretty large, I'd say around 6 feet long, and already has 2 power receptacles as well as gas and vacuum hook ups.

So have at it. What are your favorite and most useful accessories in your biosafety hoods??

I'd like to have some type of UV steriliser in place but the roof of the hood is quite high and if we mount a light to the top I don't think it will actually sterilise anything. Suggestions would be helpful on that as well.

Noise cancelling headphones

I was pushing to have strobe lights in our laminar hood, but the big dog didn't like that too much, lol...

tube rack.
pipette carousel stand.
motorised pipetting device for serological pipettes - the best ever! doubles as a dispenser

mylist:
a small bin for waste disposer
loop tray
bunsen burner (ya i know many ppl against it)
a miniature megan fox poster (for me to relax my tension)

and a small "head" picture of my boss beside megan fox (to remind me keep working and stop DREAMING)

I always imagined having fluid dispensers under the hood. For cell culture it would be awesome to easily get some culture medium, bleach, dH2O, PBS etc by the push of a button.

also one should have

<*>Small disco ball for late nights
<*>sterilized ipod
<*>Turntable?
<*>white board to make notes
<*>heated seats
<*>pair of fuzzy dice
<*>and for yourself...a golden pimp ring so people know its your "hood"

Dear "evolutionist",

Below would be my wish list:-

UV Tube: Get a "tan" while doing the TC work.
Pioneer CDX- P670: 6 CD Changer + Marshall Speakers....AC/DC for optimal cell growth.
Intergral Bluetoothed to the CD mobile phone.
Furry Dice + seat covers.
Cold drink dispensor/ice maker.
Hidden camera's to check for bad habits by other users.
Finger print recognition...so only registered users could use it.

I hope some of the manufacturers check this thread, I could get some extra dosh for product development
.
Kindest regards,

Rhombus

ok guys…if we are almost crossing the realm of futuristic sci fi here, I would wish for a HoodStar®, the cell culture version of LabStar® (post # 50) ..

It would have the exact same specifications but tailored to all cell culturing needs (the omniscient female advisor could be Megan Fox herself, digitally-captured, of course and projected thru a screen inside the hood) . And for the latest innovation, it now comes with a fully-pimped, razor-edged robotic incubator - The Incubus 5000. It can sort out and deliver plates and flasks directly to your fingertips thru a specially designed carousel and while en route, the cells are already being checked for status, confluency, even vitally stained and counted. And when you’re done, the cells get back on the platform and Incubus 5000 takes it from there. HoodStar®....you know you want one. :)

For a more realistic wish though, I’d settle for a hood that has built-in foot warmer (esp during winter time when the room’s thermostat is throwing a tantrum) or better yet, a foot massager for my tired feet.
