Neuronal cell culture - why use neonatal brains? - (May/12/2009 )
Hi, I have been using neonatal rat brains (postnatal day 6-8) for organotypic slice culture of the hypothalamus. I know that neonatal neurons are more versatile and plastic and so they survive culture conditions better. However, I am looking for a reference on exactly why neonatal rats were used for culture and I couldn't find anything. Does anyone know any specific properties of neonatal neurons that make them survive better? Any help would be appreciated! Thanks.
