Gel Analysis Software - which to use (Apr/28/2009 )

Hi,

hope this is the right section. We're looking for a new software for the analysis and comparison of 1D electrophoresis patterns, RFLPs, microsatellites and all that. Perfect would be an all-inclusive package such as GelCompar II. But this is too expensive for us.. :P .Anyway the program should at least have the standard gel analysis and imaging features (e.g. , different image-file formats, invert pictures, enlargements, contrast improvement, automatic recognition of bands, size classification, smiling correction, UV+Vis) etc...). A database function or even a phylogenetic toolbox as addition would be perfect, but not a must. No proteomics, no 2D.
Which software do you use and can recommend?
Thanks a lot for input.

Try ImageJ

There's a bit of a learning curve, but its a good program and the price is right. Its free :D :D

Thanks, I know the name at least :D . But I'm not aware if you can capture the images directly from the camera, forgot to mention it I guess. To "shot the gel photo" is of course an important option, too.

Hi! If you search for a brief, but detailed guide step by step, I recommend you the following link, where you can find two analysis methods by Adobe Photoshop and Image J. The last one is more reliable, while the former requires more marked artistic qualities......(free-hand drawing)!!!

I hope you find it helpful!!! :P
