microbiology dictionary - looking for a good one. (Apr/20/2009 )

Pages: 1 2 Next

Hallo all,
I am looking for some dictionary with most common used terms, words specific for microbiology.
I search at google for the most words, but its not always easy to find a clear cut definition.

Any ideas on what good books there are with a nice vocabularum on microbiology subjects?

For all terms associated with fungi : Dictionary of the fungi. This is a great book; you can find there methods as well as literature etc.

It is the revised version of Ainsworth, from Oct 2008. The "basics" stayed but taxonomy and current knowledge was added......got nearly double the size in pages :) and taxonomy is quite short, as they recently launched Fungal families of the world which is also a great book: perfect pictures and good taxonomic descriptions of all (!) fungal families (and of course furthure reading ). So if anybody is really interested in fungi, fungal taxonomy and biology and mycology in general, I would recommend these two books.

thanks for the books, but they seem to be all about fungi.

Any books on bacteria too then? Or arent there any complete works on micro-organisms?

Sorry, I am only working with fungi and fungal like organisms....so no idea what a good basic book is, but I would NOT buy this book it has quite some fundamental mistakes in it!

Seems odd that they would allow so many mistakes in such a books? Dont they have readers to check?
Well, good to know I shouldnt buy that book.

My boss got it for review....and at least the fungal part is quite out of date. Maybe other parts are better, I do not know......
but microbiology is such a big and complex discipline....it is impossible to stay informed about everything going on! This might be the reason for the mistakes!

What kind of information are you looking for? For very basic information: Microbiology demystified; it is a nice easy reading book giving basic information, scientifically not fully up to date, but it is more a leisure reading book to begin with microbiology.

I'll check that book, Microbiology demystified, out.

Or maybe is that dictionary on fungi you allready gave + the book with the mistakes in fungi (but better on bacteria?) a good combination to start with.

Well I just want a good book, or some books that could be a guideline for me when I read articles and for later on.
Just some book that is helpfull to find scientif terms etc...
(something like bergey's manual... everyone has it or knows it...) I want a sort of dictionary I can use.
So not only basic stuff, but also the more advanced stuff.

Maybe there arent any books like this?

(I do remember I saw a dictionary 2 years ago, a very old one, but it was a dictionary with all sorts of terms in alfabethical order and their explenation, very handy, too bad its was in some library and couldnt buy it)

Bergey's manual <-- not just dictionary.. the SAGA of bacteria
