Neuron resembling cell-which? - (Mar/26/2009 )

Hi all!
Which of cell lines or cell would most resemble neurons (cerebellar neurons)? Is it neuroblastoma or PC12 cells? I need some model cells, which can be propagated in a flask to transfect and test promoter activity, but getting real neurons would be difficult. Thank you for advice!

PC12 would be fine. PC12 even could generate neurite differentiation in some condition. But results from all this experiments simply are suggestive of what possibly happen in neuron. If you want to clarify some neurnal issue, you had to come back to neuron culture. May it help you and good luck

Hi!
Thank you for the answer, but why not, for example neuroblastoma? This is neuronal tumor cell line, isn't it? Why PC12 better? Thanks if you reply!

I am sorry that I don't know the exact property of neuroblastoma, which possibly is what you expect. In our institutes, most people use PC12 to mimic some properties of neuron, if they had to use a cell line. And as I know, some neuroblastoma cell lines could be used as a model in neuronal cytotoxicity assays (Some drugs in PD). If I were you, I would check whether neuroblastoma cell lines were adopted as a model in my interested field in Pubmed, then made the decision. May it help you and good luck.
