Enzyme prediction - (Aug/31/2016 )
I was wondering if there is any online bioinformatic tool available to predict whether the given sequence of amino acids is an enzyme or not. I want to compile unknown enzymes' (for which no function has been annotated because of their very low level of sequence homology with the other known sequences) sequenecs from a mammalian species from NCBI database. To be able to do so I will be first removing the sequences of the proteins which are not enzymes from all the protein sequences that I have.
Any suggestion in this regards will be welcome!
Thanks
This is just a guess, so take with caution...
My answer would be no, basically the definition of an enzyme is that it takes a substance and catalyses the reaction of turning it into something else. If you could know all and test all potential substrates, then you might be able to determine if a potential sequence would contain an enzymatic sequence, but as the number of potential substrates is very very high, it is unlikely that even a small percentage of enzymes have been characterized enough to determine consensus sequences for even a handful of substrates.
Note also that the function is dependent on a 3D structure, and as such might not be predictable from sequence alone.
Ok, thanks!
