very high salt concentration ?? - (Aug/03/2015 )

Dear All, 

 

kindly find the attached pictures of the gel electrophoresis tank used in my lab.

do you kindly see , where the salt is ?? and there is something yellowish too ... right ? 

 

this tank is used for gel ectrophoresis with 1X TBE buffer.

 

i dont know why i always end up with this high salt concentration..

 

is this normal ??

This is common and not a problem. It comes from buffer evaporating, leaving behind the buffer salts.  If it bothers you, wash it off with water.

you will have migration of the buffer salts to the electrodes.

 

it looks to me that the apparatus is not cleaned regularly.

 

do you leave the buffer in the apparatus between uses? (as phage434 wrote as i was) evaporation of the buffer will leave residue behind.

 

the yellow appears to be due to corrosion.

yes medfenko , we leave the buffer inside the tank between the "usage times".

 

i took the pictures today, while the tank was last washed properly maybe one month ago.
