Is there much use for animal-free microbiology tissue culture media? - (Apr/16/2015 )

Does anyone use animal-free media formulations for things like LB broth?  What are the advantages to using a medium without animal products such as peptone, where instead peptone from soy is used?

If it advertises itself as 'animal free' then it is probably an alternative sold for ethical concerns.  Occasionally there might be someone doing something specialist that requires the absence of certain materials for scientific reasons, usually its because they are worried about animal welfare or that their grant requires the use of non-animal products.  I've read a few papers that used really unusual materials and had a statement at the end says "This research was supported by a grant from the ***** fund for alternatives to animal research".
