Sterilization error!! - (Jan/30/2015 )

I accidentally left the magnetic bar in the plant media during sterilization. Will this contaminate the entire batch or cause any changes to the medium composition?

Thanks in advance,

Raj

Most stir bars are coated in non-dissolvable (in water at least) plastics such as Teflon, that also won't be affected by heat. It should be fine so long as there are no holes in this barrier which could cause addition of iron salts to the water.

I frequently leave a magnetic bar in the media deliberately to mix well the media after autoclaving, specially in those containing agar and those I need to autoclave agar and medium separated. Never had any problem.
