Storing strains in field trips - (Nov/11/2014 )

Hi, our lab will start doing long field trips to fairly remote areas and will not have access to a large -80c or -20c fridge, maybe  a small 4c fridge. Does anyone have a good recommendation, paper  of protocol, on how to maintain viable bacteria for long periods of time (>1 yr).

thanks

Hi, could you provide some more details?

Are you collecting environmental samples, human, animal, extreme or otherwise unusual environments? Are you targeting a single bacterial species or genus, or will it be community analysis? Will you be isolating the organisms or will there be the option for alternative detection methods i.e. RNA/DNA or immune based? What is the absolute minimum amount of time your samples will be in field? Will you need to transport samples on a plane at any point?
