Why do we create own customised plasmid rather than buying iy? - (Oct/03/2014 )

Hi, I am a final year student doing project on insertion of selectable marker and recombinational cloning site into a plasmid.

However, dont the lab be able to buy plasmid from other source rather than having one own customized plasmid, which is time consuming to design?

What is the advantages of having own customised plasmid?

The advantage is just what the word suggests: You can customize it with what(ever) features you need and want and can think of. If you don't need any special features and the exact plasmid you need is available commercially, there are still some reasons for making them.

(1) To learn, because at some point in your life you may need a customized plasmid or need to train someone in the art.

(2) Cost (sometimes)

(3) Old school boss

(4) Trust issue - some people just don't trust what they haven't made in their own lab.
