Need help starting microbiology research - (Nov/24/2013 )

Hello all! I've been wanting to start my own personal studies in microbiology and begin researching as a hobby. I would appreciate any advice and a decent list of supplies to start my studies.

List so far:

  • Microscope - 40x - 2000x
  • Gram staining supplies
  • Glass slides & coverslips
  • Nutrient agar
  • Petri dishes
  • Inoculating loop
  • Plastic test tubes
  • Glass tubes
  • Immersion oil
  • Benedict's solution
  • Biuret Reageant
  • Graduated Cyclinder
  • Beakers

Anything to add please do. You don't have to explain why I need it, I can research the supplies you give me and what they do. Thanks in advance!

Besides nutrient agar, you will most likely need some nutrient broth(s).  For both the agar and broths, it should be a lot cheaper to buy the components and make it yourself.

You will also need a method of disposal - the best will be an autoclave or a pressure-cooker, these can also be used to sterilize the media and anything else that you prepare.

You will also need a flame for sterile work - methanol burner or bunsen burner.

Thanks for the reply! I didn't consider broth for some reason. I should have also mentioned I already had a pressure cooker for autoclaving and a methanol burner
