hi guys, they didn't explain why I didn't get it neither gave any recommendations as sometimes they do. Just thanked me for my interest and wished me good luck. Still trying to get a job with the dark side. I'll let you know what happens.

Ask them!
Dont accept a simple no! There is no point in just accepting the no without any information. You are not helped by this.
Learn from it.
Even if it turns out its something stupid or you notice its just an excuse, you will know.
Ad perhaps they did have a good reason, but then you can learn from it.
I talked to my supervisor shortly after I applied for that position. She told me that postdoc had already been asigned to someone who had been working on that project for the last 2 years.
I didn't dare ask during the interview "hey, btw is it true you're doing this only because you have public funding and have to advertise the position?"
However, you are right in the things you say pito.

ANd if the supervisor allready knew this, why did you supervisor even bother to have you apply for that position?
Hi guys, i have a similar question... i applied for a postdoc, and the prof. told me to send three letters of reco., and he was well sounding quite positive with regards to my application...he also told me that he will get back to me after reviewing all the three reco. but its been three weeks since my last referee sent his reco, and i have not heard from this prof at all since then
...i then sent him an email 15 days back telling him that all the three reco. have been sent as told individually by my referees...still no word from him...i am in a fix...should i wait some more time/ call him/ email him??? plz help....
My supervisor didn't have me apply for that position. I found it online on my own. My supervisor knows the group that posted the job and the people that have been working on that project. They don't work together. It's just a very small world.
Idiotic, yes. Why even bother announcing the position when you've already selected the candidate? Because of politics. The money comes from public funding so it needs to follow that process.

hi tj....I'd be more convinced of this (placing an ad for recruiting a postdocs fellows just as a front) had you not had the Skype Interview....there could be a lot of other reasons why they rejected your application so the best way is to learn from experiesce and move on.
hi toejam, well i am sorry for two obvious reasons...firstly, well we r sorry that u didnot bag the postdoc...but as casandra says, things could be more than what meets the eye, cause otherwise the postdoc prof would not have conducted your skype interview on the first hand...plus ur boss had also previously told you that they have already some guy whom they want to take...so it is time to move forward and apply to more positions which suit ur research and surely you would get the right position...it is simply a question of time when u will bag one...
secondly, well without acknowledging ur problem, and hence ur thread, i should not have posted my problem...maybe i should have started another thread...nevertheless, i apologize to you and other active members who are replying...sorry...

) It is not something that takes the sleep away from me 
but it would have been useful if I had asked why, which I didn't...
Anyway, I'm sure something will come up, in the meantime I'll be looking for more jobs and also enjoying my enforced holidays

that's the spirit tjcito....the perfect job is out there with your name on it.....
you just have to find it....meanwhile enjoy the holidays....But seriously though, you can always ask for feedback once your application gets rejected but recruiters are not obliged to do this or give a reason why they didn't choose you so you just move on and keep on looking. And with every interview, you learn a lot so eventually you get better at it...
