Thermophilic Bacteria - (Jul/25/2011 )

Hello,

I am trying to keep my aerobic compost pile at a steady temperature 140- 160F Can anyone suggest how to provide an optimum environment for the heat creating bacteria? I am trying to heat water for taking showers and heating my house

I dont get it...

you have a compost pile in your house?

I dont understand what you mean by heating water for taking showers and heating your house?

Sorry I was not more clear. I have a compost pile outside my house that I try to keep as hot as possible. I have hose coiled up inside of the pile. This allows me to naturally heat the water. I am playing around with different ways to insulate the pile so heat is not lost. I want to try building an insulated bin to keep the compost in. If I can keep the compost at a steady temperature I can use a solar pump to run it into my house for showers and radiant heat. I am searching for a formula that will keep the bacteria active thus creating a good amount of heat. It seems that the method of doing batches of compost is the most efficient way of approaching it, so I will probably have to create two of these bins and rotate them.

what you are trying to do is impossible..... unless you have a very very (industrial) big sized compost pile.

Not sure how much material you have to compost, but a compost pile from a regular sized family is by far not big enough to do what you want.
