Help! Transfection newbie with a dumb question - Trying to transfect adherent cells (May/11/2011 )

I apologize if this is a stupid question but I really don't understand.

I want to transfect my adherent cell line with a plasmid using FuGENE 6. I've downloaded the protocol/info from Roche on FuGENE and have read it but I am so lost. After completing the actual protocol, how do I determine whether my cells were actually transfected? The Roche pdf simply says to measure reporter gene activity -- how do I do that? Is there a kit or something I can buy?

Generally this is done by either western blot or immunocytochemistry and measure the protein expression.
