Dry transfer - (Apr/21/2011 )

Hi,

Has anybody tried using the iBlot Dry blotting System from Invitrogen? They claim to get the protein transfer done in 7 mins.
Wanted to know how efficient the system is?

Thanks.

bio-rad has the trans-blot turbo system (also a "dry" transfer system). at their website they show a video of their system compared with the iblot system. the video will show you how well both systems work.

I had seen once the demonstration of the invitrogen iblot dry blotting system, and is quite impressive.
If you got the funding, get it, and you will love it for sure...

Nope, but semi-dry blotting is quite nice. Just make sure you get the buffer concentrations right, or you could set the whole thing on fire.

labrat,
I just screwed up in my western blot (wet transfer).... the transfer is not complete and according to the manual I add too much of methanol...
I wanna cry...

We tried the iblot and compared it against our normal biorad wet transfer system and while yes, it is super fast and convenient, in our hands it didn't transfer as completely as the wet transfer system--particularly the higher molecular weight proteins. plus, with the iblot you have to buy their ion pads, which comes out quite pricey on the per-use basis, even over the original down payment on the machine.

@Kfunk: that's too bad. Would you consider a different brand? I had the biorad SD-blotter, which worked nicely. The higher MW bands just took longer. (Disclaimer: even though I laud them, I am not affiliated with BioRad. I just use their stuff.)

@Adrian: I told you so. (some people's kids)

We were in the market for a second transfer system and ended up just buying another wet transfer system because we didn't have the patience to go through another round of screening. I think we would have been ok even with the iblot except for the cost--it didn't seem worth the price if it didn't transfer as well. I've heard good things about semi-dry though.
