Promoter region - (Mar/21/2011 )

I want to study promoter region of a gene. I came to know that there are three main regions in a promoter:
-core-promoter region
-dital promoter region
-proximal promoter region

1) Out of these three categories which one is studied extensively?
2) In which region of promoter will I find CpG islands to a large extent?
3) How do I differentiate these regions?

1) Out of these three categories which one is studied extensively?
The core promoter. Sometimes there is no difference between core promoter and proximal promoter.

2) In which region of promoter will I find CpG islands to a large extent?
You can find CpG islands frequently in the core or proximal promoter

3) How do I differentiate these regions?
By their distance to transcription start site or the beginning of the first exon.

Thanks PCR man,
Just have another doubt regarding the last question. How do I determine the distance to transcription site? How should the core promoter region be from the transcription start site?
