Cell culture fasting - (Jan/03/2011 )

Hi,

I'm using caco-2 and hepg2 cells and I want to mimic fasting in my cell culture experiments. Some authors only submit cells to serum deprivation but I don't think that's enough... I recently read a paper in which the authors submited Caco-2 to apical fasting (using transwell plates) culturing the cells with 0.9% saline buffer. Does anyone know what is the best medium to mimic the fasting conditions? Thanks in advance.

you have to check what media the cells require and go from there. Some people use low glucose or low serum to mimic fasting. you have to check if the modified media doesnot kill all your cells.
